Most bloggers completely ignore search engine optimization or SEO. It sounds way too hard and not worth the hassle.
I did too once until I realized that the top bloggers were all using SEO as if there life depended on it. Brian Clark of CopyBlogger, created special content pages to seduce Google. Jerry Low at Web Hosting Secret Revealed specifically targeted certain keywords for traffic. Other popular bloggers were also quietly optimizing their sites.
So I learned some quick and effective ways to optimize my blog without investing years in learning SEO.
Here are some quick tips for you:
#1. Install SEO for WordPress by Yoast. I talk a lot about this plugin because it is the simplest way to automatically handle basic SEO chores. I will be publishing a video about this and other SEO plugins in the Mastermind.
#2. Create and link to an XML Sitemap. A sitemap is a simple online page that contains links to every page and post on your blog. Google uses the sitemap to check for new pages and quickly find new posts.
Adding a sitemap to your blog will immediately improve your SEO. The SEO for WordPress plugin automatically creates an XML sitemap. All you need to do is create a link for it in your blog footer.
#3. Keywords and Categories: Most bloggers have dozens of categories and assign most of them to every post they write. This is a mistake. Google is looking for clues about your post’s subject, it looks at your categories as a guide. The more categories you create and assign, the more confused Google becomes, potentially hurting your listings.
I recommend limiting yourself to 3-4 categories. This will make it easier for Google to figure out where to list your posts. Also limiting your categories allows you to do some Ninja tactics like showing custom opt-in forms based on the blog categories.
(I’m jumping the gun here but this is a tactic that I use with my clients it almost immediately boosts search engine rankings and opt-ins)
There are more ways to attract more readers with SEO but I want to keep this article short and sweet. Go ahead and experiment with the ideas here. I’m sure you’ll be happy with the result
