Difference Between SEM and SEO

OK – this is a difficult issue, especially for some “experts”.

SEM (Search Engine Marketing) and SEO (search engine optimization) are terms used interchangeably. Therefore, are they same thing? No. Does it mean that there is a difference? Did not I just say there was?

So here’s the skinny:

SEO:

SEO is a set of activities that make a website as more optimized for better search engine results. Usually it’s a very technical issues related to the titles, headings, site structure, internal links, etc

The main objective is that seem relevant to sites like Google and Bing, and to potential visitors so you can get lists of good and good traffic.

Awesome right?

Well, technically, SEO is a part of SEM, which is a lot of activities … but I’m getting ahead.

On page SEO

So one thing that some people refer to as on page SEO. I just called SEO. It’s really the things that make your site to the market for search engines. There are a lot of technical things going on here, things like the proper use of the title tag, headers, links, etc.

Off page SEO

I really think this belongs in the bucket of SEM, but I’m not going to split hairs with which they disagree. In the end, who cares what you call it if it produces results.

So things off the page most revolves around getting backlinks (links to your site) in high authority web sites so that search engines will think you’re a big fish. Part of the Google algorithm is to see if people “vote” on your website linking to it. Since the black hat spammers used to use techniques such as the creation of farms of thousands of links to fool search engines, search engines place more weight on sites with authority. The authority is a bit complicated to explain in this post, but if the White House paste a link to your website, which will have more weight than a Pokemon blog.

Therefore, what the cap is SEM?
SEM = Search Engine Marketing. It is a general term for anything you do in the market, or search engines. Includes a large number of activities that may include:

* Keyword Research and analysis
* Analysis of web analytics
* SEO
* Local Search
* Planting of social media / social media integration
* The development of viral media
* Etc

I hope that clarifies things a bit. Sincerely terms only matter, so we can have a conversation about something and and both be talking about the same thing.
